What does hope really mean?

"Anyone who has ever struggled with poverty knows how extremely expensive it is to be poor"—James Baldwin

This is a quote I saw under a video about the importance of implementing Universal Basic Income in a society. It has to do with overall empathy for people less fortunate.

Pondering questions about “Hope”:

Is hope the belief that this moment isn’t good enough? Or is Hope the belief that you can’t change something yourself? Or is it an optimists way of giving up? Or is hope the belief that even when the chances of success are low, it's still worth pursuing? Optimism is when you're very sure about a desirable outcome. Vision is the opposite. It says, “I’m going to get there by diligently focusing on the path that I’m on.”
